FSSAI License & Registration Renewal
For any food business in India, maintaining a valid FSSAI license or registration is a mandatory legal requirement for ensuring food safety and quality standards. The FSSAI renewal process is essential for uninterrupted business operations and continued FSSAI compliance.
FSSAI License & Registration Validity
FSSAI licenses and registrations have a specific validity period, ranging from 1 to 5 years. Based on a new FSSAI order from January 2023, the validity periods have been standardized:
- FSSAI Registration: 1 to 5 years (applicant’s choice)
- FSSAI State License: 1 year
- FSSAI Central License: 1 year
FSSAI Renewal Timeline & Penalties
The FSSAI license renewal process should be initiated well in advance to avoid late fees.
- Renewal Period: The renewal application can be filed as early as 180 days before the expiry date.
- Grace Period: The application must be filed at least 30 days before the expiry date to avoid a late fee.
- Late Fee: A late fee of ₹100 per day is imposed if the application is filed less than 30 days before the expiry date. This late fee applies to licenses only, not registrations.
Failure to renew a license or registration before its expiration can lead to a suspension of business operations and additional penalties for non-compliance.

While the FSSAI portal pre-fills much of the information, the following documents are typically required for FSSAI renewal:
- FSMS (Food Safety Management System) Certificate.
- A copy of the existing FSSAI License or Registration.
